Palmerston has a long history with the Vale of Rhe

Palmerston has a long history with the Vale of Rheidol Railway. Not only a visit ten years ago but periods of hire in the 1920s.

After a period on display in the new museum it will go into VoR works for the ten year overhaul. It will then haul some trains and star in the August gala before returning to home metals in time for our Bygones Weekend.

NEW JOB OPPORTUNITY - INFRASTRUCTURE MANAGER…We are looking for a knowledgeable and multi-talented Infrastructure Manager to lead our Infrastructure Department and influence the development of railway infrastructure across the heritage railway sector. WELL, THAT'S A WRAP..!'The Snowdonian' arrived back in Porthmadog at 18:35 - just 10 minutes shy of a 10 hour day, covering eighty miles of the F&WHR, eighty miles of beautiful North Walian scenery, with food, drink and convivial company along the way...If you would like to experience this very special train - and the associated 'behind the scenes' tours, evening meal and breakfast in Spooner's Café-Bar, lunch at the Snowdonia Parc Brew-pub in Waunfawr and food and refreshments on the train - we're doing it all again in September.Watch our for details of 'The Snowdonian II' running on Saturday, 21st September - we'll post more information as soon as it is available.Thanks must go to all the footplate crews, on-train staff, signallers, controllers, Booking Office staff etc who make this train possible - and, of course, to all those who came along and rode the train. JUST A NORMAL SATURDAY...Meanwhile, as well as running 'The Snowdonian' special, it was basically 'carry on as normal' on the F&WHR today...OK, we didn't run any 'Mountain Spirit' services to Blaenau Ffestiniog to leave room for the special train, but we did run two trips of 'The Victorian' train to Tan-y-Bwlch, 'The Quarryman' from Blaenau Ffestiniog, 'The Harbourmaster' to Caernarfon and - in the opposite direction - the 'Snowdonia Star' to Porthmadog.Here's a selection of photos from today's 'normal' passenger train services..! ... HERE COME THE DOUBLE DECKERS..!OK, that may be pushing the alliteration a little far, but...We currently have two Decauville locos visiting the F&WHR from their home base on the Richmond Light Railway in Kent. Today they have been out on a trip to Beddgelert, so that they can be seen by passengers on 'The Snowdonian' special. Here are some photos of 'Chuquitanta' and 'Lily' arriving back in Porthmadog after their run out on the Welsh Highland Railway...--------------------------------------------CHUQUITANTADecauville 0-4-0T (Works No.36/1885)This Couillet built engine is the oldest surviving operational Decauville in the world, originally supplied to the Rodriguez sugar cane plantation, Peru. Acquired for full restoration by the Richmond Light Railway in 2004LILYDecauville 0-4-0T (Works No.648/1912) A ‘Type 3’ Decauville, which is the youngest of its type currently in operation, originally delivered new to the Thessaly Railway, Volos in Greece. JUST PASSING THROUGH...Having completed their run to Blaenau Ffestiniog, Hunslets 'Linda' and 'Blanche' were taken off the front of 'The Snowdonian' and replaced by Double Fairlies 'James Spooner' and 'Merddin Emrys' outside Boston Lodge.The two Double Fairlies then brought the train across the Cob and passed non-stop through Harbour Station, heading for a lunch break at Waunfawr and then on to Caernarfon... ...
