Young Rail Professionals Visit

Last weekend we had a very welcome visit from the Young Rail Professionals. During their visit they assisted us with a number of essential jobs.

The YRP group did a variety of jobs at Boston Lodge over the two days. In the area of Pen Cob, foundation pads were laid for the next section of fence that will be installed after Pen Cob junction is completed in January. Base ballast for the new headshunt was delivered by train and spread to complete the formation ready to support the new track. The final task in this area was the excavation of the formation against the new wave wall in readiness or the final concrete pad to be poured to support the point rodding. Adjacent to the Carriage works two very short lengths of BH rail were replaced. The short lengths had been installed as a temporary measure when the tracks leading to the heritage carriage shed had been laid.  The replacement had been on a to do list ever since then waiting for resource. They short lengths have been replaced by 4m closure rails eliminating badly dipped joints. In the new carriage shed some of the pre curved rails have been turned so the curve on them aligns with the curve on the shed and positioned ready to be installed. Hopefully track laying in the shed will commence early in the new year.

We also gave them the chance to drive a steam locomotive during their visit – Britomart was in steam to facilitate this.

This was the second working visit of the YRP to the railway and we are looking forward to welcoming them back again in 2020.
