'CHILL OUT' THIS CHRISTMAS/NEW YEAR - on the Ffestiniog Railway..!

We're another day closer to Christmas Day - and pressure's building to get everything ready for the festive celebrations... so why not take a little 'time-out' and book a nice relaxing scenic train ride that you can enjoy after the big-day is over.

We can't guarantee snow, of course, but we can guarantee comfortable, warm carriages with an 'at-your-seat' buffet service and an ever-changing view of the stunning scenery of Eryri / Snowdonia passing by as your train climbs from the coast into the mountains.

🚂 On the Ffestiniog Railway our ‘Christmas Mountain Spirit’ services run between Porthmadog and Blaenau Ffestiniog - and passengers can start their journey from either station. Sit back and relax as you enjoy a festive journey through the beautiful landscapes of Snowdonia National Park, with popular sights including the towering slate tips in Blaenau Ffestiniog, the spiral at Dduallt and the Moelwyn tunnel near Llyn Ystradau.

▪️ Trains run twice a day from Porthmadog (once a day from Blaenau Ffestiniog) between 28th December and New Year's Day inclusive. Seats available in Standard and First Class - so you can treat yourselves to a journey in one of our luxurious Pullman carriage to make the day even more special..!

'CHILL OUT' THIS CHRISTMAS/NEW YEAR - on the Welsh Highland Railway...

We're less than a week away from Christmas Day - and many of us are still running around doing last-minute shopping, present-wrapping etc... so why not take a little 'time-out' and book a nice relaxing scenic train ride that you can enjoy after the big-day is over.

🚂 On the Welsh Highland Railway our ‘Christmas Cwellyn’ services begin at our award-winning Caernarfon station. Once on board, sit back and enjoy as the train sets off through the majestic landscapes of the Snowdonia National Park, on its way to the interval stop at Rhyd Ddu station. Here, there will be a short break, allowing passengers an opportunity to enjoy the views and take some photos, before setting off on the return journey to Caernarfon.

We are delighted to find that the 'Ffestiniog Railway' has been shortlisted for the 'Reader's Award' in the upcoming Heritage Railway Association Awards, which is decided by votes from readers of Steam Railway magazine...

The list of ten nominees covers a wide range of activities from loco restoration and new-builds, through rolling stock adaptations to railway extensions in the form of track or buildings. In the case of the Ffestiniog Railway, we have been nominated for the overhaul and re-boilering of ‘Quarry Hunslet’ VELINHELI / FELINHELI.

This loco has always been a popular sight on the F&WHR, appearing at special events and on footplate ride duties, with its scarlet livery brightening up the scene - and it has been great to see the little Quarry Hunslet back in steam again this year.

It would be a great show of appreciation for the efforts of the team of dedicated volunteers and staff who have been involved in the work on VELINHELI, if all our supporters reflected this and voted for them in these awards.

🎅 LYRA'S FIRST TIME VISITING SANTA...

"We recently visited Santa at the Ffestiniog & Welsh Highland Railways’ station in Porthmadog - for the price we paid we were not expecting much, but… WOW!!!!!!

Even for us adults it was the most magical experience, with every detail considered. We took a trip on the beautiful ‘Elf Express’ train to Minffordd, watched Santa’s elves busy in his workshops, enjoyed mulled wine, hot chocolate and the gorgeous Christmas village scene. However, the best was yet to come as we stepped into the train carriage for our time with Santa.

Hands down the best Christmas Grotto I have ever seen; no rush, Santa was amazing with the children, the elves were hilarious and the whole carriage was decorated most beautifully. Plus - the toys that Santa gave the kids were excellent!

For the price of this experience, I would recommend it to anyone. We travelled down from Anglesey, and it was beyond worth it.

Thank you, F&WHR, for a real taste of Christmas magic for us all..!"

🎅 HAPPY SANTA..!!!

✅ Following further inspection of the railway, we are pleased to say that the decision has been taken to run our Santa Trains from Caernarfon tomorrow (Sunday 8th December) as originally planned.

⚠️ Note: this is subject to no further problems arising overnight. There is a tree obstructing the line at the moment, but this will be cleared before trains run in the morning. Thank you to those who reported it to us..!

✅ In Porthmadog, Harbour Station will be open as originally planned for Santa's Grotto, Footplate Rides and 'Elf Express' Shuttle Trains to Minffordd.

⚠️ Note: We are currently without power at our Loco Works and along the line to (and at) Minffordd Station. This may cause a delay, so the shuttle trains may run later than anticipated - but they will be running... but again, subject to no further problems arising overnight.

Our Gift Shop and Spooner's Café-Bar will also be open as planned.

Footplate Rides should take place on 'Blanche' - a loco with an enclosed cab to protect visitors from the weather, should it rain..!

❗️ Please allow extra time to complete your journey to us, as there may well be ongoing disruption on roads in the area - due to flooding, fallen trees etc.

We will be very busy in Porthmadog tomorrow, as many people have transferred their Grotto visit and 'Elf Express' ride from today's cancelled events. To help us take care of everybody, please do your best to keep to your booked times so we can avoid queues and delays. If you arrive early, Spooner's Café is lovely and warm, while footplate rides are available outside without pre-booking, so there is something to enjoy before your Shuttle Train ride and visit to Santa in his Grotto..!

It's been a hectic and frustrating 24 hours, but hopefully we will be able to put Storm Darragh behind us and get on with the serious business of enjoying the festive celebrations...

Having heard back from our inspection team, who have been out working in atrocious conditions to see if it would be possible to run trains at all today, we have been forced to make the sad decision to cancel all of our planned activities today.

With trees blown down onto the railway, roads blocked and damage to other structures it is not only impossible to run trains, it is also difficult for staff and visitors to get to the railway.

Pre-booked ticket holders will be contacted, via text/email with further information, as soon as possible.

Santa Train bookings for cancelled trains will receive a full refund in the next couple of days.

People with bookings for Santa's Grotto and the Elf Express will be offered the option of rebooking on another date or receiving a full refund.

Please bear with us, and avoid phoning unless absolutely essential, to allow the Booking Office staff to process all the changes.

FURTHER DECISIONS on tomorrow's Santa Trains and activities at Harbour Station will be made this afternoon and an announcement made as soon as possible.

A BIG "THANK YOU..!" Today is 'International Volu

A BIG "THANK YOU..!"

Today is 'International Volunteer Day', established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1985 to recognize and celebrate the contributions of volunteers worldwide.

Here at the F&WHR we are extremely lucky to have a fantastic band of skilled and willing people who 'give up' their free time to help run, maintain and organise our activities - working in all areas of the organisation. They come from a broad spectrum of backgrounds, professions, ages and abilities but all share a passion for the Ffestiniog Railway and/or the Welsh Highland Railway.

Without their support we would not be able to run the F&WHR as well as we do now. They operate our locomotives, guard our trains, control our signals and the safe running of the railway; they help maintain our track, clear lineside vegetation growth, look after station gardens, greet our visitors, work in the shops and booking office; they restore, repair and rebuild locos, carriages, wagons and buildings; they work ‘behind the scenes’ publicising our railways, raising funds, looking after our archive collection, providing financial and legal advice, help us in planning for the future etc. The list goes on and on...

Such a wide variety of skills and personalities, but their efforts make the F&WHR what it is today - and will be in the future. If you would like to be part of that future, come and join us as a volunteer yourself. Bring your skills and interests with you, or come and try your hand at something completely different from your 'day to day' life. It's a great way to meet people, make new friends and become part of a team working to a common goal.
